App Ops Desk · Issue #30

Widgets and extensions need their own ship gate

Extensions ship with their own Info.plist truths, sizes, and failure modes. Solo founders often smoke only the main app and learn about the widget on customer screenshots.

Read time: 6 min Widgets Extensions Pairs with Issues #14 and #23
One action this week: Install the archive build and long-press the home screen: add your widget, confirm placeholder/data, and that it updates after a foreground refresh.

Extension gate

  • Every extension target shares intentional marketing version / build scheme
  • Widget families you claim actually render
  • Deep link / URL from widget lands correctly
  • App Group / keychain access group still valid
  • Size impact logged if extension bundle grew

Failure modes

  • Widget timeline stuck on placeholder after release
  • Share extension missing new UTTypes
  • Notification service extension crashing silently
  • Main app signed; extension profile stale

Bottom line

If customers see it outside your app chrome, it is a first-class ship surface.
